Are you looking to buy or hire a guitar?

BUY OR HIRE?

Guitars can be hired quite cheaply from Pumpkin Music and also from the Colwell Music Hub in Gloucester. The adavantages of hiring are:

  • The pupil gets to try before making the committment of buying.
  • You can move up to a bigger size at any time.
  • Repairs carried out for you.

WHAT TO BUY

BEWARE: There are some terrible guitars out there. It is recommended that you buy from a proper music shop or online music shop who will accept returns if the instrument is faulty. Avoid the guitars sold in charity shops. They are often hard to play and don't take the knocks.

Beginners are better off with an acoustic rather than electric guitar which can be best enjoyed when the pupils has some experience and can take the weight of a full-sized guitar. Unless you pay a lot, many 3/4 electrics have poor intonation.

STEEL OR NYLON STRINGS?

Nylon strings are easier for young children. It's confusing because they are called "CLASSICAL" although they can be used for any type of music.

A decent steel-string guitar will cost upwards of £100 so is probably better for an older and experienced pupil.

SIZE AND MAKE

Half-size suits 6- 9 year olds. Three-quarters suits 8 -12+. Full size for 10 and upwards.

Popular makes at the moment are: Ashton, Valencia, Jose Ferrero and Stagg.
